TherapEase by Julie

My story...

My first experience of massage was over 15 years ago, on a Spa break with friends. This was an opportunity for us to get together for a catch-up; to switch off from the chaos of everyday life; and give our bodies some much needed TLC. I chose a full body massage, feeling the urge to be pampered from head to toe. Afterwards, I felt so relaxed and revitalised; triggering the future habit of treating myself, as often as I could, to get more of that 'feel good factor'.

In more recent years, I found myself suffering with tense, sore muscles in my back, neck and shoulders from working long hours at a computer. I developed tension headaches and a poor posture; and the pain affected my ability to sleep. I was aware that a massage at irregular intervals, was not enough to get on top of the niggling and persistent discomfort, so I booked more regular treatments, as and when my therapist recommended it. After several sessions, my therapist was able to break down the adhesions and knots, and to finally release that tightness in my muscles so I was able to move more freely and without pain. From then on, my treatments became more about maintaining these positive changes, and enjoying the freedom and positive mental attitude they created.

I got to love the Art of Massage Therapy. I had experienced first-hand the many benefits Massage Therapy had to offer both mentally and physically, and I felt passionate about enabling others to experience it too, so I decided to change my whole career path and train to become a fully qualified Therapist, completing an ITEC Level 3 Diploma in Massage.

I successfully completed my Diploma in July 2020, gaining a 'distinction'; the highest grade possible. Since then, I have also completed intensive courses in Advanced & Deep Tissue Massage; and Indian Head Massage, in readiness for my new Lifestyle career. I will strive to constantly improve and develop my skills; and to learn new therapies as they evolve so that I can offer the best service to my clients for the purpose of enhancing health and well-being. My goal is to provide effective treatment that adheres to the highest professional standards in a safe, caring and relaxing environment. I am a member of the Guild of Holistic Therapists, and I am fully insured by them to carry out the treatments I offer.

My therapy room, only two minutes drive from Macclesfield hospital, provides a calm and tranquil space for you to unwind and heal. Whether you are looking for a body massage to ease the tensions of modern living and enhance your emotional wellbeing; a deep tissue massage to treat muscular imbalance or chronic joint/muscle strain; or an Indian Head Massage to achieve a calm mind and a stress-free body; it is my passion to help you achieve your goals.

Body Massage (Using Swedish Massage Techniques)

Swedish massage is one of the most commonly offered massage techniques. It involves the use of long strokes, kneading, deep circular movements, vibration and tapping. Swedish massage is gentler than deep tissue massage and better suited for people interested in relaxation and tension relief.

The many benefits of this treatment include:
  • Relaxation - calms the nervous system and relaxes muscular tension
  • Releases endorphins - enhances feelings of emotional wellbeing and improves mood
  • Reduces stress - helps to clear the body and mind of unwanted responses to stress, anxiety and feelings of worry
  • Increases flexibility and helps improve posture - Swedish Massage will elongate the muscles, open the joints and decrease swelling; all of which will ease movement, increase flexibility and improve posture
  • Aids better sleep - massage increases serotonin levels in the body which can help you to fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer
  • Improves blood circulation and energy levels - massage improves your body’s ability to deliver fresh blood and more oxygen through the body to muscles and organs resulting in more energy
  • Eliminates toxins and aids immune system – as massage increases our blood circulation and encourages the flow of lymphatic fluid, it helps to flush out toxins from our body, and increases the activity of white blood cells that help our body fight diseases.

Indian Head Massage

This massage works on significant areas of the body, especially the neck and shoulders where stress affects major muscle groups, and it often brings immediate relief. Tensions are eased and fibrous knots and nodules melt away. The efficiency of the circulatory and lymphatic systems improves, toxins are dispersed from tense muscles; and flexibility and fluidity of movement is restored.

The client, fully clothed, sits in a massage chair to receive this treatment. A range of different movements including light and deep kneading and compression movements over the neck, shoulder and scalp areas are applied to release blockages and release built-up tension, relieving stress and promoting relaxation.

During this treatment, pressure points on the face are also gently stimulated and stroked. This face massage helps any sinus problems as well as increasing the relaxing effect of the massage that has been applied.

The many benefits of this treatment include:
  • General and specific relaxation for muscles, providing immediate relief
  • Relieves eye strain, tinnitus, aching jaws from clenching or grinding teeth, migraines, tension headaches; and symptoms of sinusitis or congestion
  • Increases oxygen supply to the brain
  • Helps alleviate symptoms of stress/anxiety related disorders
  • Improves quality of sleep
  • Enhances suppleness and flexibility to head, neck and shoulders
  • Scalp stimulation increases blood circulation promoting healthy hair

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue is a form of massage that focuses on releasing the myofascial restrictions of the deeper muscles, tendons and ligaments of the body.

This massage employs techniques to work below superficial connective tissue with the intent of breaking up old structural patterns and allowing the free flow of nutrients and oxygen to the blood. I will work with the client to establish the main areas of discomfort, and I will use movements to release chronic muscle tension through slow, deep strokes; with more direct pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscles.

Deep Tissue also helps to free trapped nerves, oxygenate poorly circulated areas and it allows the spine and joints to relax into alignment.

Whilst I am required to apply a considerable amount of pressure when doing Deep Tissue massage, I will always work within the comfort zone of the client. The key to gaining the most out of Deep Tissue massage is to relax, so that your muscles do not respond to my movements with resistance.

Deep Tissue is aimed at everyone. Repetitive activities, or mental and emotional influences on the body can affect posture. Poor posture can promote gradual development of muscular imbalance leading to pain and tension. In addition, those that work or are involved in leisure activities that require a high level of muscular output often accumulate residues of lactic acid in their muscles, leading to stiffness, inflammation and pain. Deep Tissue massage can help alleviate all these symptoms.

Additional benefits of this treatment include:
  • Optimised joint mobility/flexibility
  • Lowered blood pressure and heart rate for increased relaxation
  • Lowered cortisol levels in the body to help reduce stress
  • Improved posture
  • Break up of scar tissue leading to improved movement
  • Increased circulation which promotes healing
  • Improved quality of sleep

Client Aftercare Advice

It is recommended that you follow these steps after your treatment in order to gain maximum benefit and aid the healing process:

  • Drink plenty of water. This helps to rehydrate your body, reduces fatigue, and also assists in the elimination of toxins released during your treatment
  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine or cigarettes; they are counterproductive as they increase the levels of toxins within the body
  • Avoid strenuous activities to help your body relax and de-stress further
  • Choose light/healthy foods
  • Aids better sleep - massage increases serotonin levels in the body which can help you to fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer
  • Make time for yourself; rest and relaxation will allow the body to heal

Massage is a safe therapeutic treatment, however over the next 24 to 48 hours you might experience some of the following side effects. These are positive signs that your body is responding to the treatment and is starting to rebalance itself:

  • Redness/soreness of muscles, especially where deep work was carried out
  • Increased thirst
  • Tiredness or fatigue
  • Increased urination
  • Flu/cold like symptoms (i.e. runny nose/cough). In some cases, headaches may also follow
